Thibodaux High graduates 305 students

THIBODAUX — As his fellow Thibodaux High graduates pumped their fists, Ryan Johnson felt a surge of overwhelming joy.

“My heart just dropped,” Johnson, 17, of Thibodaux, said. “I never thought (high school) would pass me by. Now I'm ready to go to college.”

Johnson, who plans to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and major in chemical engineering, was one of 305 who graduated Tuesday night before a near-capacity crowd inside the Thibodaux Civic Center.

The ceremony featured remarks from Thibodaux High Principal Kevin George, Lafourche Superintendent Jo Ann Matthews and three of the class' nine valedictorians — Blake Bourgeois, Kelli Cortez and Jordon Legendre.

The ceremony's loose and boisterous atmosphere made it more akin to a gathering of friends than a button-down event.

“When I ask to hear it for the Class of 2010 the roof should blow off this place,” George said as he took the microphone. The crowd obliged with a deafening roar.

George, principal for three years, encouraged students to seize opportunities.

He said during an interview prior to the ceremony that he has no doubts about what this class can accomplish.

“This senior class has achieved so much athletically, academically and socially,” George said, adding any number of positive adjectives would describe the group.

Changes are coming in the near future for the new graduates, Matthews said.

“Rent is every month, and it is half of your Wal-Mart check,” the superintendent joked.

Students seemed to embrace the idea of change. They also expressed a sense of pride and satisfaction.
