Wellesley students graduate from colleges, schools

For the Parziales of Wellesley, UMass-Boston is a family affair. It was back in 1973 that Lynne Parziale first attended UMass-Boston -- as a 3-year-old in the day care center. She remembers playing with her best friend, Joey, while her mother, Maureen, worked on her bachelor's degree in art. Now, 25 years later, Lynne Parziale graduated from UMass-Boston May 31, with a bachelor's degree in psychology. There to watch her receive her degree was her mother and father, James, an adjunct faculty member in UMass-Boston's Graduate College of Education.
Six seniors from Wellesley graduated from The Rivers School in commencement ceremonies June 13, at the school.
Paul Croce, Shawna Fraser, Adam Herrup-Morse, Matthew Hubball, Ashley Stanley and Celine Tobey were among 69 graduates from the Weston school.

Several of these students also earned special awards for achievement and commitment in specific academic or extracurricular areas. They were named at a Prize Day Ceremony June 12.

Croce, who starred in the school's drama productions of "Pippin" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and was a standout for the boys' varsity tennis team, was awarded with the Jeremiah J. Sheehan Memorial Prize. The Sheehan prize is presented by the Rivers Alumni Association to the student in the graduating class who has shown that he or she follows in the footsteps of Jeremiah J. Sheehan, a former well-loved master, in his gentility, kindness and all-around sportsmanship.

Herrup-Morse, who served as assistant editor of the school newspaper and earned first-place honors this year at the Small Independent School Art League competition for a collage, won the Two-Dimensional Art Prize for his commitment to the arts.

Hubball, a member of Rivers' gold-medal winning Select Jazz Band, was also recognized for his devotion to the arts -- specifically music -- as he was awarded with the Performing Arts Prize.

Julia A. Clayton of Wellesley graduated from the University of Massachusetts Medical School at Worcester June 1. Clayton will begin a residency in pediatric medicine later this month at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
Several Wellesley residents graduated from Massachusetts Bay Community College May 24 during the 35th annual commencement exercises at the school's Wellesley Hills campus.
Recent graduates include: Jonathan James Spoerl, Carole Kramer Arsenault, Kimberlee Ann Dow, Patricia Sullivan Durickas, Chin-Jun Hsu, Doris Mercedes Jaimes, Maura Anne Lawler and Carol Ann MacPhee.

Also, Thomas J. McKee, Michael S. Medeiros, Jennifer Elizabeth Nilson, Isaura Vega, Julie Ester Weissman and Carrie E. Wollaston.

Christopher G. Griffith, son of Graham and Linda Griffith of Wellesley, received a bachelor of arts degree in English with a concentration in creative writing from Colby College May 25. Griffith, who minored in education, was on the dean's list while attending Colby. He is a graduate of Wellesley High School.
Timothy J. Mutrie, son of Nancy Mutrie of Wellesley, and George Mutrie of Kingston, received a bachelor of arts degree May 18 at the 169th commencement of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Mutrie graduated with a major in history.
Adam Cohen graduated with distinction from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University Jan. 15. He majored in atmospheric sciences, and was named to the dean's list every semester at Cornell.
The notation "with distinction" is awarded to the top 10 percent of the graduating class, based on the last 60 credits completed at Cornell. Also, Cohen received the National Merit Scholarship from Data General Corporation, American Meteorological Society Scholarship, Cornell Honor Society and Academic Excellence Award in Soil, Crop and Atmospheric Science.

Michael Corticelli of Wellesley received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering June 8 from UMass Dartmouth during the 97th commencement exercises.
Two Wellesley students were among 472 graduates to receive a bachelor's degree May 26 from Bates College during the college's 131st commencement exercises.
The former president of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Prize winner Oscar Arias, who received an honorary doctorate of laws, delivered the commencement address before a crowd of 3,500 at the outdoor ceremony in front of Coram Library.

Lydia Langford received a bachelor of arts degree in classical and medieval studies. She spent a junior semester abroad in Italy in 1995, and was a member of the women's lacrosse team. A graduate of Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, she is the daughter of George and Emily Langford of Wellesley.

Matthew R. Navins received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. Navins, a dean's list student and graduate of The Rivers School in Weston, is the son of Richard and Mary Pat Navins of Wellesley.
