Wellesley student achievers

Lauren Wetherbee, a seventh-grade student at Wellesley Middle School, received a one-course scholarship at Regis College in Weston, in recognition of her outstanding performance in the 1997 Talent Search. The Talent Search is conducted by the Johns Hopkins University Institute for the Academic Advancement of Youth. Wetherbee, the daughter of Pamela Carens and David Wetherbee of Wellesley, was among those honored at an awards ceremony at Boston University June 8. In addition to the scholarship, she received a certificate for achieving well above the mean for high school seniors on the College Board's SAT I exam.
Jennifer Ann Fitzgibbons, daughter of Thomas and Caroline Fitzgibbons of Wellesley, was named to the dean's list for the spring 1997 semester at Saint Michel's College in Colchester, Vt. Fitzgibbons is a sophomore psychology major.
Students who complete a minimum of 12 credits and achieve a grade point average of at least 3.4 at the end of a semester are recognized for their scholarship by inclusion on the dean's list.

Sixteen Wellesley residents were honored at the 117th annual distribution of certificates and prizes at Newton Country Day, a Sacred Heart school.
Freshmen Mariana Carrera, Margaret Ciavarella and Julie Gerstmayr were awarded red ribbon certificates, which denote an average of B+ or above with no grade below B-. Sophomore Maura Murphy and juniors Angharad Coates and Lauren Phelan were also awarded red ribbon certificates. Middle school students awarded red ribbon certificates were: sixth-grader Elizabeth Murphy; seventh-graders Claudia Carrera, Abigail Cullinan, Carolyn Greco and Caroline Sullivan; and eighth-grader Elizabeth Morey.

Academic Prizes were conferred on students with the highest grade average. Carrera received prizes in French III, English and geometry; and Ciavarella received the French I prize. Maura Murphy was awarded the honors mathematics prize. Coates received prizes in French IV and honors English; and Phelan received the history prize. Seniors Emily Gerstmayr and Patricia Hennessey earned prizes in Latin III and in art history and AP English, respectively.

Academic prizes were awarded to middle school students Elizabeth Murphy for religion and mathematics; Claudia Carrera for music, French, and mathematics; Abigail Cullinan for art, history and Spanish; and Elizabeth Morey for music.

Additionally, Wellesley students distinguished themselves on the 1997 National Latin, French and Spanish exams. Mariana and Claudia Carrera were the regional winners on the National French exams; and Ciavarella was a sixth place regional winner on the Spanish exam. Students achieving distinction on the Latin exam were: Emily Gerstmayr, cum laude; Julie Gerstrnayr and Maura Murphy, both magna cum laude; and Carrera, maxima cum laude.

Coates was awarded the Mount Holyoke Book Prize, and Phelan was awarded the Harvard Book Prize in recognition for their outstanding scholarship, leadership, service and character. Additionally, Duffy Markham, a junior, received the Headmistress' Award in recognition for her outstanding service to the school. Morey received the Catherine Baxter Award, presented to the middle school student who best exemplifies the goals and criteria of Sacred Heart Schools.

Ciavarella and Cullinan were presented the Sacred Heart Goal II award for their "commitment to educate to a deep respect for intellectual values." Sullivan was presented the Sacred Heart Goal III award for her "commitment to educate to a social awareness that impels to action." Markham and freshman, Elizabeth Yearwood were presented the Sacred Heart Goal IV award for their "commitment to educate to the building of a community as a Christian value." The recipients of the Sacred Heart Goal Awards are nominated by the students and named by the faculty.

Tracy Berkwits of Wellesley received the dean's honors award for the spring semester at Montserrat College of Art.
