Governor Bush And Lt. Governor Jennings Announce 2003 High School All-Stars

Students honored for academic success, service and leadership.

Governor Jeb Bush today announced the 2003 winners of the Governor’s High School All-Stars program. The Governor’s High School All-Stars are announced annually naming exemplary students in Florida’s public schools.

“These students have achieved a lot at such a young age. Besides their academic success, the High School All-Stars have done incredible things, providing service to others and as leaders in their communities,” said Governor Bush. “I encourage all students to follow the path that these All-Stars have chosen. They serve as role models in their schools and truly make this state shine.”

The All-Stars program, now in its fourth year, honors one high school junior from each school district throughout Florida. The students are selected as the Governor’s All-Stars for demonstrating leadership qualities and academic excellence: 1) academic success - at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, 2) good behavior - discipline record consistent with good deportment, 3) leadership skills - participation in extra-curricular activities such as athletics, enrichment programs, and school clubs and 4) service to the community - volunteerism, mentoring and other civic activities. A panel comprised of at least one teacher, one administrator, one parent, one community member and two high school seniors select the high school juniors who best reflect the criteria of the All-Stars.

“It is great to see these students being rewarded for all their hard work and service during their time in high school,” said Lt. Governor Toni Jennings. “The Governor’s High School All-Stars show a good example of ambition and character that is needed for success. Governor Bush and I commend these students for their contributions to their communities and schools.”

Earlier today, Lt. Governor Jennings spoke to the All-Star students about leadership. Governor Bush hosted a luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion, which was followed by a roundtable discussion. The students also toured the Capitol, visited the House chambers and received a signed photo of the Governor and an award certificate.
