MISSOURI - Elsberry - Elsberry High School Awards Night - May 19, 2000

Elsberry students awarded honors

ELSBERRY -­ Awards Night at the Elsberry High School was Tuesday.

Rachael Collins was named Outstanding Student in the Elsberry High School for the 1999-2000 school year. She also was named for the Good Citizen Award, with Stephanie Grimes as alternate.

Patricia O'Brien received the Art Award; Kayla Kunza and Mandy Johnson, Girls' State; Rusty Kinion and Matt Lagemann, Boys' State; and Stephanie Grimes received the P.E.O. Award for having the highest grades in the high school for the entire year.

Foreign Language Awards went to Tara Sherman, Spanish I; Mandy Ray, French I; and Brooks Hill, Silver Arrow.

The most improved students for the year are Michael Riffle,freshman; Crystal Spaeter, sophomore; Jessica Statler, junior; and Kristy Byassee, senior.

Josh Mayes, senior, was recognized for having perfect attendance all four years of high school. Other students with perfect attendance for the 1999-2000 year are Jonathan Carter, Kyle Haynes, Ashley Heil, Kari Koch, Shanna Lonsberry, Adrienne Markwardt, Steven Millikan, Ryan Mills, Tanya Morris, Gina Spies, Kenneth Thomas, Alan Turner, Katie Watkins and Tiffany Whitson.

Students with 95 percent or better all year in the science department are Physics, Rusty Kinion and Tanja Korhonen; A.P. Physics, Stephanie Grimes and Danny Pestka; Silver Arrow, Dave Burnette; Physical Science, Ashley Whitson, Kim Whitehead, Jodi Talbot, Michelle Parrinello and Megan Heitman.

Teacher of the Year Award went to Ezra Tillotson. Tillotson took the Elsberry High School students to the Academic Bowl for the third consecutive district championships and the second consecutive state trip. Bobby Gray set an all-conference, district and state record in the Academic Bowl. Other students receiving awards at the bowl are Kera Steavenson, freshman; Mandy Maxwell, Mary Margaret Lenk and Tara Sherman, sophomores; Matt Lagemann and Joan Lenk, juniors; and Bob Gray, Brooks Hill and Danny Pestka, seniors.

Michael Mayes received the top English Award; Shanna Lonsberry, the English II Essayists for her D.A.R. essay; and Tara Sherman, Optimists Club.

Social Studies Department Awards went to students with 90 percent or higher scores. Ronnie Hall and Hannah Briscoe both had 96 percent in Missouri Constitution; Jennifer Walter and Ronnie Hall both had 93 percent in the U.S. Constitution; Tara Sherman had 99 percent in World Geography for world map exam. She missed only two out of 312 test items. Danny Holten received the Social Studies Silver Arrow Award.

Awards for Math include Danny Pestka, Calculus; Dustin Jeager, Algebra; Tanya Korhonen, Algebra II; Bob Gray, Stats/Discrate; and Stephanie Grimes, Silver Arrow. Geometry went to Kim Whitehead, and Pre-Calculus to Dylan Schlattman; with a Silver Arrow to Tasha Skaggs.

English Award, Danny Pestka (college prep); Drama, Tricia O'Brien and James Bowley; Top World History Award, Bob Gray; Top American History, Tracy Matlock; and Silver Arrow, Chris Gamblin.

The Elsberry High School Year Book Queen and King are Sara Byrne and C.J. Cohea.

School publications Accounting I, Carly Welch; Accounting II, Amy Bailey; Spelling, Jodi Beth Talbot; English I, Jodi Talbot and Nicki Turner; Yearbook and Newspaper, Rachel Collins, Laurell Davis, Angie Heitman, Beth Mayes and Amanda Watkins.

Anatomy/Physiology, Tiffany Whitson; Zoology/Botany, Jeremy Barron; Biology Most Improved, John Haclik and James Suddarth; Chemistry, Brooks Hill, Stephanie Grimes and Danny Pestka; Special Science, Brooks Hill and Bobby Gray.

Sociology Award, Rachael Collins, Bob Gray and Stephanie Grimes. Psychology Award, Stephanie Grimes.

In the American Government U.S. Constitution Exam, both Amber Briscoe and Angie Heitman received 94 percent.

The fifth-hour American government class ranked sixth in the state-wide U.S. Constitution Competition sponsored by the Missouri Bar Association. Eighteen Elsberry High School students competed again this semester. The results of this exam have not been received at this time.
