Big Walnut High School will graduate the last class of the 1900s during its 49th annual commencement on Sunday, June 6, 1999 at 2 p.m.
Almost 200 graduates, their parents and friends will gather to honor the Class of 1999 in a ceremony to be held at the football stadium. In case of rain, ceremonies will be held in the gymnasium.
There are no outside speakers slated. The class' five valedictorians will be giving speeches on various topics. Those five, Erin Bäby, Jansen Day, Megan Fry, Lisa Shaffer and Kristen St. Jean, all finished with GPAs of 4.0 or higher; a higher GPA being made possible by the advanced placement courses that award five points for an "A" grade.
Jessica Peet has been named salutatorian for the class.
"We have some excellent students in this class," said guidance counselor Mark Predieri. "Having five valedictorians shows how strong the class is."
Predieri added that it also speaks highly of the class that the top student in the county - Shaffer, Renaissance Student of the Year and recipient of the Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award - Delaware County - and the Teen of the Year - Day - are members of the class.
"We also did well on 12th grade proficiency tests, and honor tests," he said.
Following the processional, National Anthem, opening remarks and a musical number by members of the Big Walnut Senior choir, the first speaker slated is Erin Bäby, who will offer "Some Last Thoughts." Jansen Day will speak on "Tomorrow" and Megan Fry has listed her topic as "United Together." Lisa Shaffer will deliver her speech, "Inspire Integrity," followed by Kristen St. Jean's "Camaraderie."
Following the speeches, class president Amarah Hicks will present the class memorial.
Big Walnut Principal Charles Workman will present the Class of 1999 and diplomas will be given out by Board of Education members Jim Hildreth and Barb Shelby, Delaware JVS Superintendent William Stalets and BW Superintendent Dr. Melissa Conrath, who will also offer the ceremonial opening remarks.
